How to Start Your Own Business Online Part 3

In today’s blog article in our series on how to start your own business online, I’ll delve into details on how to create content for blog that will help you to draw in free targeted traffic from search engines like clockwork. It doesn’t matter which niche market you’re operating from; you can create great content that your target audience will be happy to read, share and link to from external sources. All you’ve to do is to do a bit of research in addition to what you already know, and write and publish it as a blog post.

You can read part 1 and part 2 of this series from here and here respectively if you haven’t done so before now. As much as I’m concerned, it is only half truth to say “content is king.” What will always qualify as king is useful and relevant content and only your readers can determine that. And the best way to make your readers determine in advance if your content is relevant to them is to answer their questions or provide solutions to their problems through your blog posts or articles.

Creating a great content is all about following basic structure or layout of writing an article i.e.
-Blog post title
-Article body

Let’s quickly go through each of the above items to understand it better.

Blog Post Title

Every blog article must have a title that is catchy and clickable. If potential readers are not inclined to click on the title of your blog post especially from the SERP (search engine results page), it means you’ve not done enough ground work with regard to your published content.

As you may already know, majority of information seekers use the search engines to find products, services or content that they want to learn more about. They usually type “search queries” into the blank search box of the major search engines like to get the expected information.

These search terms are otherwise known as keyword phrases. Your first task before writing a blog post is to research the type of keywords your readers will use to find your content and include it in your blog post title. If no one is clicking on your title, it clearly means it sucks. In such cases, you may be compelled to revise it to make it better.

The second step is to write short but attention pulling meta data (especially the meta description) that clearly assures an info seeker that you’ve the solution or answer to his or her search query from your website. Meta description is that little blurb for your blog content which the search engines have indexed below the title of your post. You can see it in the image below.


However, if you’re a beginning digital marketer, it is highly advisable you target long tail keyword phrases so that you can stand a chance of ranking in search engine results page especially on the first page i.e. from positions 1 to 10.   


The introduction of your blog post is the opening paragraph and it should state the problem or question in your reader’s mind and a sneak peek into the solution or answer you’re going to provide for them i.e. what to expect from your content. You may be fighting a losing battle with your competitors if you cannot grab your readers’ attention with the blog post title and in the opening paragraph of the article.

These elements (title and intro) should be the hooks you need to keep your readers glued and engaged to your blog and its content for a longer period of time. You’ve to engage them not to click away from your website until you’ve successfully guided them to your CTA (call to action) section of the content.

It’s the introduction of the blog post that will usher your website visitors to the body of the text. It’s imperative you take extra time and care to craft it. But in the event you suck at writing, there is no problem at all. Body of the Content

A lot of bloggers and webmasters do not know that the big search engines like Google and co are now rooting for complete content. If you’re not willing to give it all, your competitors will do. In the body of your blog post, provide the information your readers expect from you. Don’t skimp!

You’re using your blog article to build relationship and trust with your target audience. As soon as your readers know, like and trust you, it will make it easier for you to ask them to take the desired action and achieve the overall goal of your online business blog.

But to make your blog post readable and interesting, you may want to follow this basic writing advice:

-Write in short paragraphs
-Use bullet points
-List items for easy digestion
-Have clear CTA (call to action)
-Use headings and sub headings
-Make use of appropriate lexicon related to your niche market  


The conclusion is the close of your post where you share your final thoughts and opinions. It is also the time to ask your readers for their comments, thoughts and contributions to the blog post. If you’ve not done so before, it’s now the time for CTA. Here is when you’ll wrap things up in logical conclusion and order.

Most veteran bloggers and writers will advice beginning writers to write the introduction and conclusion after writing the content of the post. This will give you a better idea of what to include in the opening and closing paragraphs of your blog post and make them stronger.

Briefly, here’s my checklist lowdown of what makes a great content.
i.                     Target long tail keywords
ii.                   Provide useful and relevant content in your article
iii.                  Create problem-solving or answer-giving content
iv.                 Determine your writing style and voice i.e. conversational and interactive
v.                   Use appropriate lexicon and jargons related to your niche market
vi.                  Write for human readers first and search engine crawlers second
vii.                Create long form blog posts as against short form blog articles where necessary
viii.              Cite verifiable statistical examples, sources and references in your blog posts to buttress your points
ix.                 Vary the types of content you create and publish on your blog i.e. list type, ultimate guide, case studies, how to, step by step, review, etc

In conclusion, bear it in mind that writing an article that is worth sharing and linking to, requires planning and following the basic writing process steps and any blogger can do it including you. How to Start Your Own Business Online Part 2

In part 1 of our how to start your own business online, I explained how to find business ideas to start, how to decide on a niche market to target, how to conduct keyword research, how to register a domain name and how to buy web hosting. In today’s blog post, I’ll go into the details of how to start a blog with WordPress CMS (content management system) platform.

But before you can successfully complete this step, you’ve to register your domain name and purchase web site hosting. It will offer you the ability to install WordPress blog on your domain for free. With HostGator web hosting service, you can create a blog with one-click WordPress install and I’m using their cPanel dashboard to explain the WordPress blog tutorial on this page.   

Basically, there are two areas I’ll cover on how to start a blog, namely:

-Installing the bare bones of WordPress (WP) on your domain, and
-Customizing and optimizing your WP blog.

Before you start your blog, remember to conduct keyword research so that you can determine in advance the search terms you’ve to target on your website and the search query to include in your domain name address. Keyword research is an integral part of every successful online business. It helps you to focus on publishing content around the needs of your target audience.

When you write SEO articles specifically targeting profitable search queries, you’ll stand a chance of attracting highly targeted readers and leads to your blog all for free from organic search results of the big search engines like and

When you get web hosting from HostGator, they will send your hosting details to the email address which you provided during the sign up process. You’ve to follow the URL supplied by HostGator to log in to your cPanel dashboard or simply type on the browser to sign in using your username and password. But you’ve to replace with the actual name of your domain followed by the appropriate extension i.e. .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, etc.

Step #1: Install the Bare Bones of WordPress on Your Domain

While at your hosting dashboard, scroll down to “Software” section and click on “QuickInstall” icon. It will take you to “Site Builders & CMS” page. Click on the WordPress link as shown in the image below

You’ll be taken to a page where you can select the domain name you want to install your WordPress blog on. If it is your primary and only domain in the account, just select it to go to the next step. Next, fill out all the blank fields to complete your WP blog installation. These fields include blog title, admin user, first name, last name and email address.

You must make sure you’ve included your primary keyword in the blog title. You can change it later when customizing and optimizing your blog anyway. For you to be able to complete the blog installation process, you must tick the check box beside “Terms of Service Agreement” as shown below.

On completion of WP installation, HostGator (or any other reliable web hosting you’re using) will send you a success report of your installation which will include admin username and auto generated password. You can change this password later in the WordPress admin dashboard area.

Step #2: Customize and Optimize Your Blog

The next task is for you to customize and optimize your blog in order to prime it up for search engines. Firstly, log in to your WP account from your browser using your username/email address followed with the associated password. The address you’ve to type on your browser will be Of course, you’ve to replace with your actual domain name.

While at your WordPress account dashboard, there are so many things you can do to improve the look and feel of your blog and increase its functionality. At the left hand side of your dashboard are various icons which you can click on to change and update everything related to your blog.

The first basic task which you’ve to complete is from the “Settings” tab. If you hover the cursor over the settings tab, a sub menu will show up i.e. general, writing, reading, discussion, media, permalinks and privacy.

Click on the “General” tab to update the blog title, tagline and your WordPress and Site Addresses. If you prefer your website URL to have the www always included in it, simply add the “www”  without the quotes to the default naked URL.

The tagline should include the secondary keyword that you’re targeting while the blog title will be your main keyword. Scroll down and click the “Save Changes” button to update and save.

Next, click on the “Permalinks” tab to update the default web page URL to search engine friendly URL. To do this, simply click the radio button beside “Post name” and save your changes.

The “Reading” tab is the next item I usually edit to suit my needs. First, click on it to open the page. You can then edit the:

“Blog pages show at most” 10 posts to 5 posts
“Syndication feeds show the most recent” 10 items to 5 items
“For each article in a feed,” click the radio button beside "summary"

This is what I prefer to do for good reasons. I don’t want lots of posts to be showing up on my blog. I want my readers to search around my blog to find more information. I think five blog posts are enough to display at a time. Also, I believe showing five items at a time on the syndication feed is okay as well.

Clicking the radio button beside the “Summary” in the section that reads “For each article in a feed,” any blog post showing up in the feeds will not display all the content. So, if your reader is interested in the whole blog article, he/she will be forced to come to your blog to read more.

There are lots of housekeeping details you need to complete in order to fully customize and optimize your blog. But these basic tasks are enough to get you started. Another area you’ve to take care of immediately is installing analytics which will help you to analyze sources of traffic and the types of keywords website visitors are typing into the search engines to arrive at your blog. With the free Google Analytics and Google webmasters tools, you’ve what it takes to get everything set up.

Also, from the “Appearance” tab, you can locate “Theme” section where you can upload or change your current theme. Theme gives the look and feel of your blog. There are free themes from the WordPress database if you don’t have the budget to invest in a premium theme at the moment.

In the same vein, from the “PlugIn” tab, you’re at liberty to upload various free and paid plugins to increase the functionality of your blog website. However, you’ll require requisite knowledge and skills to tie everything together seamlessly and succeed.

Step #1: Find a Business Idea to Start With

This is the starting point and foundation of your business success. If you fail to get it right at this stage, you’ll continue to struggle without getting any result. There are 1,001 online business opportunities out there that you can start with but I’ll advise you to consider your skills and talents in line with what you’re deciding to do. A lot of beginning internet entrepreneurs starts with affiliate marketing business but you must not follow suit if it‘s not your forte.

There are other online business models including freelance writing, domain investing, coaching or mentoring, writing and selling ebooks, freelance business, building forum or membership site around your expertise, and so on. Take the time to do your research and due diligence so that you’ll be convinced of what you want to start with and make money on the internet.

Basically, there are two ways to decide the type of business you should start with. Firstly, you can start a business where you have passion or interest. This can be your hobby, experience, knowledge, interest, training, tutelage, and so on. The only task you have to perform here is to test if the business idea is commercially viable on the World Wide Web before starting with it.

For example, if you’ve experience in music or you’re passionate about it, you can start with that business idea after conducting keyword and market research for commercial viability. There are free and paid online business tools to conduct this research including keyword research tools, forums, surveys, questionnaires, etc.

The second option is to “follow the money.” This is when your primary concern is the commercial viability of a business idea before you go for it. It doesn’t matter whether it is your area of specialization or not. Step #2: Decide on a Niche to Focus on

It doesn’t matter the type of online business model you’ve decided to start with, you’ve to find a niche market to target. The idea here is for you to narrow down and focus your efforts on doing something you enjoy and are good at. You cannot be here and there and expect to succeed.

What then is a niche? Simply put, a niche is a smaller or mini part of a big market. For example, “general health” is a big market to look at right away. But if we narrow it down, we can consider “women’s health” as a niche. I can even dig deeper to focus more on “women with acne” or “women with acne during pregnancy” and start an online business by writing, teaching and promoting content around that subject topic. It is as simple as that!

As an online business owner or webmaster, you’ll do well if you start focusing and working in niche markets until you’ve a good grasp of digital marketing inside out. You can use this system to start affiliate marketing business, build Google Adsense websites or create landing pages to sell your own products and services. It depends on what you like to do in order to earn money online.

Because I’m teaching you how to start your own business online, I’ll concentrate on “make money online” niche to drive home my point. You can use the same process to build your business around any blog website idea. There is nothing complicated about this process if you follow my tutorial to a Tee.

Some obvious niche markets include:
-Health & Fitness
-Personal Development
-Jobs & Employments
-Home & Garden
-Green Products

Let’s take an example with the “investing” market. You can launch a blog focusing on “stock investing” and then “penny stocks investing” as your niche i.e. Investing>>Stock Investing>>Penny Stock Investing. As a penny stock blogger, you may want to target keyword phrases such as:

-How to buy penny stocks
-How to buy penny stocks without a broker
-Where to buy penny stocks
-List of penny stocks
-Penny stocks to buy

I discovered the above list of search terms from launching the free Google Keyword Planner tool in my Google Ads account.

Step #3: Conduct Keyword Research

This step involves using keyword research tool to uncover search queries which your target audience is entering into search engines to find their desired products, services or information from the web. These types of keyword phrases are what you’ll create unique content around.

It will not make any sense to start a blog and publish articles on it with vague key phrases which no one is looking for. You’ve to focus on words which online shoppers and information seekers are actively typing into or other popular search engines if your aim is to get free targeted traffic on a continuous basis.

For the make money online niche, you may want to look out for additional keywords such as:
-Earn money online
-Work from home jobs
- Best way to make money online
-Make money from home
-Ways to make money from home

I used the free Google Keyword Planner tool to find these search terms in a matter of minutes and you can even target specific countries or cities in your research if you like. For a start, aim at targeting 10 to 20 long tail keyword phrases. You don’t have to go for overly competitive keywords because you may never rank for them at any time soon.

But be sure each keyword has an average monthly search volume of at least 1,000 and above and the competition is surmountable so that you can reasonably rank on positions 1 to 3 of page one of

Step #4: Register a Domain Name

This step is the simplest where you’ve to register a domain name with your target keyword in the URL (universal resource locator). These days, it is difficult finding available exact match domain to register except you’re lucky to grab one from expired domains list. However, you can easily get an available domain name by adding a descriptive word as prefix or suffix to the keyword.

Just recently I agreed to partner with my spouse to register a domain name and use it to create a blog to teach our intending target audience how to start a business from home and make money. But because I needed a short and easy to remember domain, I’ve to settle for a business keyword. Clearly, my target keyword is “business” but I’ve to include a suffix in order to find an available name.

In my earlier penny stocks example, you may buy a domain like or if they are available to hand register. All I did was to add “hub” and “now” to the keyword phrase “penny stocks.”
